Impact of place upon celebration of birth – experiences of new mothers on a postnatal ward, by Julie Wray, Senior lecturer, user and carer lead, University of Salford, joint editor of The Practising Midwife Journal Julie Wray highlights the fact that most research into postnatal care focuses on the experiences of first-time mothers with an uncomplicated birth, and is often the result of a brief survey. This, she points out, cannot give us a proper understanding of the issues. Her own research is the result of time spent observing activities in two postnatal wards, and of in-depth interviews with 17 women over a period of seven months following birth. Her findings give us a real insight into the way in which the physical environment of the ward affects these women and also the staff. “As I observed the wards the sheer volume and diversity of staff, along with visitors, struck me as being rather chaotic. Significantly, the wards were not quiet peaceful places: the atmosphere was one of busyness” Photo Credit: gettyimages.com Related Search Pack Maternal satisfaction with postnatal care
